Apple’s New Maps App in iOS 6 Brings full 3D Map Renderings, Turn-by-Turn Navigation, Siri and Yelp Integration

They really did it. Apple cut ties with Google Maps and miraculously took to the streets and skies to create their own mapping solution. We got a sneak peak at the new Maps application today during the keynote presentation for WWDC 2012, and now we’re here to tell you everything you need to know about the new mapping software that will come standard in iOS 6.

First of all, this didn’t come out of nowhere. The media has long known that Apple was interested in providing their own mapping services, as evidenced by the acquisition of a number of relevant companies. Today is when we finally begin to see the fruits of all that. The Maps app coming in iOS 6 is no knockoff of what’s come before; instead, Apple has breathed new life into mobile navigation by introducing such features as full 3D map renderings, turn-by-turn navigation, Siri and Yelp integration, and up-to-date, crowd-sourced traffic info.

Now, the degree to which Apple manages to stun the masses with their mapping technology might be influenced by Google somewhat beating them to the punch last week. Clearly, we’re entering an age of full 3D map renderings on mobile devices. The determining factors in who wins this battle will ultimately be in execution and usability, and you can bet that our money is on Apple. Even the limited screenshots shown during the keynote revealed an interface that was cleaner and more appealing than what we’ve gotten used to… Just wait till we get the new Maps app on our phones and get to experience a city flyover.

As you’d expect, Siri is fully aware about the new Maps app, and she’ll be right there to present you with the fastest route. She may even point out a great destination along the way (pulling from the 100 million business listings currently available).

So, even though we previously spent considerable time digging through the available navigation apps to provide you with an overview, you might want to hold off on those pricier options for the time being. There are always advantages to working with Apple’s built-in apps, and with the new Maps, it doesn’t look like it will require any sacrifices for you to do so… The new Maps will be available along with the rest of iOS 6 this fall. Let’s hope Google Maps doesn’t betray us during the time in between.
