Are these Photos of a Fully Assembled iPhone Really the Next iPhone? We Hope Not. [VIDEO]
The iPhone rumor mill has been in full effect for a long time now, and with the fall on its way, things are only going to get more intense. We’ve been seeing all sorts of mockups and little pieces of the supposed iPhone 5 (or whatever it will be called, most likely “the new iPhone”), but it wasn’t until today that we have been able to see a fully assembled POSSIBLE next generation iPhone.
And I have to be honest: I’m not a fan.
Before I get to that, let’s take a look at the photos, courtesy of the fine folks at 9to5 Mac, by way of iLab.
It has everything we’ve been hearing about for months now.
New dock connector? Check.
New speakers, with headphone jack on the bottom? Check.
Two tone back plate? Ugh…check.
Somehow, iLab got it’s hands on an assembled piece, along with a number of internal components, such as the home and volume buttons, so head on over to the link to check the rest of it out. When put together, it looks like a nice device.
If it were released two years ago.
I have to preface this: I’m a card carrying member of the Apple Fanboy Club, Phoenix chapter. But even I have to say that I’m not exactly impressed with this design, if only because it’s nothing new. It was completely understandable for Apple to keep the same outer shell between the iPhone 4 and 4S; but this is still essentially the same thing. Sure, there are a number of improvements, the dock connector being one, and most certainly a better camera and larger screen (if you’ve been looking for that). I still feel though, that if this is indeed the next iPhone, a lot of consumers are going to be upset. Remember the outcry when the 4S was released? Granted, that died down rather quickly once people got their hands on the device, and things may very well go the same route with this design. But I’d be hard-pressed to think people will show their displeasure with their wallets.
But then again, I wasn’t a big fan of the iPhone 4 design when it was leaked, and now I think it’s the most gorgeous phone on the market. So really, I know nothing.
This isn’t to say that I’m shouting gloom and doom for the company. Quite the opposite, in fact, because the design itself really isn’t that bad, it’s just that it’s SO similar to the previous two iterations. That’s the issue for Apple: they’ve set the bar so impossibly high that even they may miss it from time to time. Regardless, the company will be just fine.
After all, this might be a decoy leak from the company. One can only hope, right?
