Gameloft to release Duo Gamer—the $80 Controller that works with five games

I’ve given up getting excited about those iOS controller Kickstarter projects that pop up now and then. No matter how useful and cool they look, it’s apparently impossible to get that sort of accessory approved by Apple… Impossible unless you’re Gameloft, that is. The giant development studio responsible for some of the App Store’s biggest hits has just announced that they will release something called the Duo Gamer—an $80 controller that currently only works with five games.

It’s cool to see one of these iOS controllers actually coming to the market, but right off the bat it looks like Gameloft’s Duo Gamer has a lot going against it… From the price to the physical design of the controller, it doesn’t give off the strongest first impression. But don’t let me stop you from dropping $80 so that you can get a fresh experience with one of the following games:

  • N.O.V.A. 3
  • Order & Chaos Online
  • Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation
  • Brothers in Arms 2: Global Front
  • Asphalt 7: Heat

The Duo Gamer has an edge over other devices like the iCade in that it doesn’t have to trick your iPhone or iPad into thinking it’s a keyboard over Bluetooth. Instead, Apple lets Gameloft do it’s thing, and hopefully the gameplay experience is all the better for it… But then, look at it, is that a controller you’d want to call your own, no matter how good it works? Doesn’t seem as though Gameloft put much emphasis on comfort or aesthetics, but I shouldn’t speak before giving it a try…

We don’t have a release date for the Duo Gamer, but sometime soon you can expect to find it at Best Buy, Target, Amazon, and of course, Apple Stores.
