HTC CEO denies $6-$8 Payout to Apple for each smartphone, says he’s Happy with Recent Settlement
It was easy enough to accept the idea that Apple’s pile of cash would grow exponentially as a result of the recent settlement with HTC. Following that agreement, the media quickly spread the idea that Apple would get $6-$8 for each HTC smartphone. That claim was supported by analysts, and we really had no reason to question it until today when HTC CEO Peter Chou came forward to say that claims of such a payout were “baseless and very, very wrong.
So what do you think Apple DID take away from the HTC settlement? Chou says the $6-$8 figure is “outrageous,” but he doesn’t go so far as saying that there’s no payout whatsoever. As was made clear when the settlement was originally announced, HTC is a lot more interested in portraying their focus on innovation than detailing what they’re being forced to pay Apple on a per-handset basis. Maybe they did come away from the dispute relatively unscathed, or maybe Chou and company are so relieved to be through with the litigation with Apple that any outcome seems like a good one.
