Is 360-degree TV coming? The Gadget Show uses an iPhone to debut the Technology
Those of us in the states might not be familiar with The Gadget Show, but the tech show out of the UK recently got on everyone’s radar after introducing the world to 360-degree television. Channel 5 executed the grand experiment, and what would you know, they used iPhones to do it.
To be more specific, the Gadget Show asked their loyal viewers to download an app that–by some magic–plants the viewer in the center of an advertisement that unfolds in every direction. As seen in the video above, the viewer gets to take command of what they’re watching at any given moment. And while the Gadget Show example is just a whole lot of chaos, it’s easy to imagine how the 360-degree viewing technology could be adapted for use in sports or other broadcasts.
If you weren’t among the privileged who took part in this Gadget Show advertisement as it took place, you can still get a feel for how it went down by visiting the site and clicking around the screen as the video plays. I imagine it’s not as smooth as it would be on a touchscreen, but it still acts as a good example of the potential applications that are present if 360-degree catches on. There’s no denying that it’s kind of amazing…
So now that it’s proven possible, I guess we wait for some network to adopt this technology in a meaningful way. Sports comes to mind first and foremost, but who knows what they’ll think of next.
