Is this the iPad 5 We are Waiting For This Year?

As the rumor mill for Apple devices gears up for the upcoming year, we’ve brought to you a number of possible changes to pretty much every device under the Apple sun, except for maybe the iPad.

Reports are now coming out from the folks at iLounge that they have seen the rumored iPad 5, and here’s a rendering of what it might look like:

1

If this rendering looks familiar to you, it’s because you’ve seen the iPad Mini and notice the striking similarities between the two. The reporter from iLounge is saying that this next generation iPad will have virtually no bezels on the side, so that when you hold it in portrait mode, its 9.7″ screen is all you will see, plus the minimum space at the top and bottom that’s necessary to house the camera and home button. It sports the same chamfered edges and curves as the iPad Mini, and is considerably thinner and lighter.

While we knew upon the iPad Mini’s release that this new body design was likely going to be put into action with the Retina iPad, it’s a whole other thing to see a rendering of what that might look like and consider it to be accurate. There had also been rumors that the iPad 5 release would take place in March, but most analysts and reports are now predicting otherwise, saying we should expect a new release in the coming fall. This would be the most sensible release date, as Apple has worked quite hard to move all of the iOS releases to a similar time frame, and a March release would seemingly undo all of that. It also makes sense that March would be too soon, as what we see above is a total design overhaul, and one that’s not easy to implement.  With new technologies like IGZO display needed to make the existing Retina iPad a lot thinner, it would be a given that Apple would need more time to make these changes in their supply chain on a grand scale.

The photo above is a rendering by Martin Hajek, who also has some other interesting renderings of possible changes in Apple’s iOS line that we might see this year, including the fabled iPhone 5 Mini.
