Leaked Photo Shows “iPhone 5C” Packaging. What does the ‘C’ stand for?

Well, last week we got our first real look at what might be the fully-assembled budget iPhone, but right away this week the rumor mill has returned to normalcy–as we’re once again reduced to talking about just bits and pieces of the device or its packaging… Though we’re still talking about a completely unconfirmed leak, the Chinese blog WeiPhone has posted a picture of a bin full of plastic trays that bear the name “iPhone 5C.”

Let’s assume for a moment that these are the real trays to be used in packaging the as-yet-unannounced iDevice, the immediate question becomes–what does the ‘C’ stand for? The first thing that comes to mind is almost certainly wrong–can you really imagine Apple appending an iPhone’s title with the word “cheap”? Taking other rumors into mind, it seems more likely that the ‘C’ could signify “color,” or maybe even “cost,” if Apple is comfortable addressing the presumed price drop that directly.

WeiPhone’s track record in iOS rumors isn’t exactly spotless, but for what it’s worth (not much), the trays pictured do closely resemble packaging used for the 5G iPod Touch.

Interestingly, WeiPhone isn’t the first source to have us thinking about the name iPhone 5C. Turns out, The Onion was all over it earlier this year. Depending on how annoyed you get by the endless rumors, the video below might be just the bit of levity you need to carry on till the blasted budget iPhone gets officially announced and named by Apple later this year.
