Next Issue for iPad brings Netflix-Style Magazine Service to the App Store for $9.99 per month
Have you exhausted Netflix and Hulu+ to the point that you’re actually looking to READ something? As unlikely as that might be, the App Store now offers something for those people who can’t keep their iPads loaded with enough new magazine content. It’s called Next Issue , and for $9.99, you can use it to stay up-to-date with nearly 40 big name publications.
Next Issue is ushering in the age of all-you-can-read magazines, just like Netflix did with video. But right from the get go, their pricing model might be problematic. Do we value text content as much as video? Because that will be a requirement if users are expected to shell out $9.99 each month. Some of the titles available for that price include GQ, Wired, Golf Digest, Bon Appetit, Vogue, Self, and many more… For the even heftier price of $14.99 per month, customers get access to publications like the New Yorker, People, TIME, and Entertainment Weekly. Both subscription options include back issues, ensuring that either $9.99 or $14.99 will secure you endless reading content. What’s more, Next Issue Media promises that magazines will come with extra stuff like photos, videos, and interactive features.
Looks like Next Issue will be a legitimate competitor for Apple’s own Newsstand, but only if you require a whole bunch of regularly-updated magazines and are willing to pay fairly high prices to have them.
