Nokia HERE Maps App now available in the App Store. Will it be your alternative for iOS 6 Maps?
You might call this a very early Christmas present… Just after it was announced last week, Nokia’s mapping app called HERE (currently pulled from the App Store) has
become available in the App Store. It’s a free download, and judging from early reviews, there’s reason to hope that it might be a viable alternative to the built-in Maps of iOS 6.
As we mentioned last week, HERE packs a nice feature list that will hopefully fill in some of the blanks left by Apple’s own maps offering. HERE is built on HTML5 and comes with an offline mode, as well as public-transportation data and walking directions—all on top of the fact that Nokia’s location data is highly revered in the industry.
Now that HERE is available for hands-on use, we’re already seeing some early impressions roll in. So far the app sounds perfectly functional, though time will tell if it stands up as a truly complete alternative to Maps in iOS 6.
Here’s an idea: Thanksgiving is a mere two days away, and most of us are probably hitting the road for that family gathering (if they’re coming to you, consider yourself lucky)… What better time to take HERE for a spin and see if it’s the mapping savior we’ve been waiting for?
