OS 4.0 Beyond Multitasking
While for many the big announcement today was the ability to multitask and group applications in folders on the new OS, they are just a couple of the many additions to the iPhone and iPod Touch that will be rolled out this summer (OS 4.0 for the iPad will launch this fall ).
A universal inbox for email with multiple MS Exchange support will also be included along with 97 other things not spoken of at length during the presentation. A few other highlights include:
- Apple has also added iBooks to the iPhone which not unlike the iPad will ship with Winnie The Pooh and will allow wireless syncing to other iPhone OS devices.
- Enhanced enterprise tools including better encryption, accessibility to private virtual networks, and wireless app sharing.
- Game Center, a social gaming site that promises to take iPhone gaming to a new level with new multiplayer options.
- A 5X digital zoom for the camera and the ability to tap the screen for focus when filming video with the 3GS or third generation iPod Touch.
And then there is iAd, something that I fear is going to just make me angry. Touted as a way for app developers to include ads in their free apps, it screams intrusive to me. This, as details surface, will be a huge story for the user, the developer, and Adobe since these iAds will be built solely with HTML5. Stay tuned as we delve into the pros and cons of this latest swipe at Google for advertising revenue and other features as they become known.
