Samsung Moves to Distance itself from Apple, says it will Terminate LCD Supply Contract

In what can best be described as an effort to break up with Apple before they get broken up with, Samsung has announced that they will terminate the long-standing LCD supply contract between the two companies. The split is set to occur in 2013, at which point Apple will have to get their millions of liquid crystal displays elsewhere.

This relationship has been visibly dissolving for some time now—from the major lawsuit victory for Apple to the decrease in shipments that has already occurred, it’s been apparent that Apple and Samsung are growing apart, to say the least…

Apple will presumably look to alternative suppliers like LG and Sharp to make up for what they’re no longer getting from Samsung. At one point, the number of LCDs coming from Samsung was as high as 15 million, and though that number was severely diminished already, it’ll be non-existent next year.

For its part, Samsung says they’ll do more internal sales to make up for the loss of Apple’s business. They also plan to do increased dealings with Amazon and the Kindle Fire… Am I way off base here, or is Samsung the obvious loser in this break up? With nothing holding the two companies together and their copycat-tactics damaged by the lawsuit, Samsung might have a long road back to their former “glory”…
