Think it’s easy being an app developer? Here are the numbers you need to crack the Top 10 Apps
Almost everyone you know fashions themselves as an app developer, especially given that the tools to be one are so much more ubiquitous nowadays. However, being a top developer isn’t as easy a result to come by as many would hope, which has been evidenced in a new study.
The study from mobile app analytics firm Distimo shows that in order to be considered a Top 10 paid app by Apple, an app must be downloaded around 4,000 times a day, with top grossing apps earning $47,000 per day. As you can see, it ain’t easy being green. The report was given in Distimo’s monthly publication and relayed to AppleInsider last week, indicating that the results come from the month of May 2013.
There is a steep climb in order to get one of those coveted top 10 spots, but even making it to the top 50 apps aren’t that easy. In fact, just to get to the number 50 top grossing spot, your app had to generate nearly $12,000 a day.
But what about free apps? Well, if you want to crack the top 10 there, hope that your app will be downloaded a whopping 72,000 times a day. Yes, we all know that free apps enjoy a much larger download base, but that’s still a lot of downloads to get on a consistent basis, and is pretty much the gold standard for any developer to shoot for if they want name recognition for their software.
On the other side of the device coin, we see that iPad-only applications require nearly $10,200 a day to crack the top 50 for paid apps, and 8,200 downloads a day just to crack the top 50 free apps, which comes out at almost three times less than an iPhone top 50 app.
So what does all this tell us? That the movers and shakers in the app development world deserve our respect, because getting to where they have been and currently are was a monumental feat.
