This 2005 iPhone Prototype Proves that the iPhone 4 Design Didn’t Copy Sony
If you’ve been paying attention at all to the Apple vs Samsung patent war currently going on, you’re aware that Samsung released documents that show convincing arguments of Apple copying a Sony design for the iPhone.
Now Apple has struck back and said that designs for this iPhone were in the works since 2005, long before the Sony design. The prototype device, codenamed “Purple”, has a striking resemblance to the iPhone design, seemingly squashing the accusation that the overall design was lifted from the Sony design brought to light last week.
The design dates back to August of 2005, which was a few months before the Sony prototype was, seemingly giving Apple the argument here.
What’s more, Apple is contending that the Sony design was actually mimicking Apple’s. in the court documents for the case, obtained by the fine folks over at The Verge, it’s noted that the Sony project was merely “an enjoyable side project”, one that wasn’t something they had their sights set on.
In light of all this evidence, the judge for the case has ruled that Samsung is no longer allowed to present evidence of the Sony-inspired design to the courts, so that might be the end of this debate. For now, at least.
