Verizon iPhone 5 secretly Using Cellular Data while on Wi-Fi. Fix it with a special Update
During your first days spent with that brand new iPhone 5, the last thing you need are some surprising data charges incurred while you know you were using Wi-Fi… As unwelcome as that scenario sounds, it may be happening to users as we speak, and to remedy the situation, Apple has pushed out a Carrier Settings update that is a must-download for iPhone 5 customers on Verizon.
We’re not sure what happened to open up this data wormhole, but you can imagine the obscene amounts of data that might be getting consumed by iPhone 5 users who believe their devices to be using Wi-Fi at the time… They’re probably watching hours of Netflix and downloading 1GB apps, all the while trusting that Wi-Fi has got them covered, but then, uh oh, what’s this statement from Verizon?
“Under certain circumstances, iPhone 5 may use Verizon cellular data while the phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network. Apple has a fix that is being delivered to Verizon customers right on their iPhone 5. Verizon Wireless customers will not be charged for any unwarranted cellular data usage.”
That’s an assuring promise at the end. Worst case scenario, maybe you’ll have to spend some time arguing with a customer service rep about how you used 11 GB of data in one day, but in the end, Verizon promises nobody is getting charged for “unwarranted” usage.
You can also try to avoid this situation by getting the update Verizon is talking about. To do so, follow these cues:
- Settings > General > About
- Install update as prompted
- Restart your iPhone 5
If all goes well, you’ll be updated to Verizon 13.1 (confirm this back at Settings > General > About)
